Mr. Chan has a profound love for gardening that is his source of happiness and purpose in life. Unfortunately, he suffered from cataracts and optic disc edema for years causing blurry vision, which obstructed him from enjoying his favourite hobby. Despite the referral to a public hospital for further treatment, the waiting time is excessively long.
Saint Barnabas’ Society and Home became a blessing to provide eye surgery service under its project Regain Crystal Clear Vision to him. After undergoing surgery, he expressed that he regained his vision and found joy in life again, allowing him to continue finding pleasure in gardening activities, and that his self-care abilities have been improved too.
An Operation Santa Claus grant was a favourable support to Saint Barnabas’ Society and Home in 2022. The poor and homeless in Hong Kong benefited from its services by providing free eye examinations and treatment, primarily elderly, and glasses when needed, so that they can restore clear eyesight and cope with daily living.

For wheelchair users like Mrs Chu and her husband*, a weekend hike in Hong Kong’s beautiful countryside once felt completely out of reach. Without accessible trails and facilities, exploring nature was a massive physical struggle, a beginner-level hike ended up taking them eight times longer than the average walker.
The couple joined outdoor workshops and guided tours in the “Enhancing Wellness of the Disabled and Elderly communities through Nature and Technology” programme led by local NGO Parks and Trails. Together, they successfully completed routes at Tai Tam Reservoir, Hong Kong Wetland Park and Long Valley. By using the NGO’s “Accessible Trails Guidebook”, which details 20 local routes, they have since gained the skills needed to navigate the outdoors with confidence.
“Hearing the water flowing, smelling the greenery and hugging the trees, it’s just wonderful. I am so delighted that we can explore more trails with family and friends,” she said.

Jan* is a Pakistani elder living in Hong Kong’s Eastern District, a neighbourhood home to a vibrant South Asian community. Like many women of her generation, her life, for decades revolved around caring for her family while her children went out to work. Because of language barriers, she found it hard to integrate into the wider community and had little opportunity to communicate with her Chinese-speaking neighbours.
Since joining the “Narrating Life Stories – Supportive Project for Ethnic Minority Elders”, organised by the Methodist Epworth Village Community Centre, Social Welfare, Jan has begun to find a sense of belonging. Centred on the sharing of life stories, the project aims to promote social inclusion through the power of storytelling.
As a member of the project’s art therapy group, Jan has created several artworks under the theme “The Five Flavours of Life”, using art to explore stories behind the different “tastes” of her life. Volunteers also visited her at home and, based on her sharing, crafted a “family tree” artwork symbolising intergenerational legacy, and placed it in her personal “life story treasure box”. These works were later showcased to the public at the Life Celebration Exhibition.
“Through art, I found my place here. ” she said.

Ms Wong* constantly worried about her 23-year-old autistic son, Isaac, who faced intense anxiety and emotional challenges transitioning out of special schooling without structured support.
Through the “SEED” courses led by local NGOs Be Priceless for children with special education needs (SEN) and their families, Isaac learned “In-and-out Breathing” and the “Circle of Control” techniques to manage his anxiety. Guided by visual charts, he now independently completes his exercises at home. The programme also broke the family’s isolation by offering a safe space for peer connection.
“I am so delighted that classmates proactively chat with us. This is a wonderful opportunity for the children to practise their social skills,” she said.
